Tough draw for Botic van de Zandschulp against Borna Coric

10 February 2023

The 50th edition of the ABN AMRO Open counts no less than four Dutchmen with Botic van de Zandschulp, Tallon Griekspoor, Tim van Rijthoven and Gijs Brouwer in the main singles tournament.  Van de Zandschulp has the toughest draw of the quartet with Borna Coric. The last time four Dutch players were directly in the main draw was in 2011.

"They are all tough opponents here," judged Van de Zandschulp, who with 35th place is the highest ranked Dutchman in the world rankings. "This is a strong field of participants and actually there are no easy opponents among them at all." Van de Zandschulp and Coric played each other once before and that was in Rotterdam Ahoy. The Croatian number 23 of the world triumphed in 2021 in the opening round: 6-4, 7-6 (4). "That was indeed close. It was immediately his last tournament that year, because Coric was injured for a long time there."

Wildcard entry Tim van Rijthoven will play American Maxime Cressy in the first round. Besides Van Rijthoven, Gijs Brouwer will also make his debut on center court in Rotterdam. Brouwer took over the wildcard from Frenchman Gaël Monfils, who had to drop out at the last minute with an injury. The 26-year-old Brouwer, the number 156 in the ATP rankings, will meet Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland. Tallon Griekspoor, who won the ATP tournament in Pune last month, will face a player from the qualifying tournament.

Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the ranking list of the anniversary edition. The Greek world number 3 will start against Finn Emil Ruusuvuori. Defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime will play his first match against Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
